Abstract

We studied the local knowledge of seabirds by artisanal fishermen from San Pedro Bay, south–central Chile. By conducting group and individual interviews we identified local names for species and the use of seabirds by local villagers. We recorded local names for 14 species, and provide a list for 21 seabirds and shorebirds that inhabit the San Pedro Bay. The penguin or patato (Spheniscus sp.) was identified as a potential charismatic species by the villagers. We found that seabirds, especially Sterna hirundinacea and Spheniscus magellanicus, were used as indicators of the presence of snoek fish Thyrsites atun in the bay. The knowledge of both birds and the marine ecosystem by artisanal fishermen of San Pedro Bay stresses the importance of local ecological knowledge as an appropriate tool for the management and conservation of natural resources in marine ecosystems.
