Abstract

Standard karyotypes, G-band, C- band, as well as other chromosomal data are reviewed for species of bats which are distributed in South America. Systematic implications, potential problems, and areas and taxa deserving special study are discussed. Techniques for the preparation of G- and C- band chromosomes, especially as related to field conditions are described. A new method involving the freezing of fixed cell suspensions in liquid nitrogen appears to hold considerable promise for preparation of G- and C- band chromosomal preparations for systematic studies.
