Abstract

Analysis of the bioenergetic characteristics of Myotis chiloensis in summer, clearly shows that this species has a single and short euthermic period (2-3h) followed by a long period of daily torpor or natural hypothermia. Apparently this pattern is not shared by other congeneric species. The daily energy expenditure estimated by time budget and food consumption indicates that the alternated occurrence of euthermic and torpor periods permits this species to have a positive energy budget, allowing it to live, to grow and to reproduce.
