Abstract

Between June 12 and 20, 1998, we participated in the second winter antarctic cruise on board of the AP 46 Contralmirante Oscar Viel Toro, of the Chilean Navy, in the Bransfield Strait. The main species of marine mammals recorded were Antarctic fur seal, Leopard seal, Weddell seal and Minke whale. The only species of penguins registered in the Bransfield strait was, Gentoo. The sea-ice limit was concentrated only in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula (Rada Covadonga). This fact and the difference in the distribution and number of the principal mammals and birds registered between 1996 and 1998 winter cruises, would be explained by the influence of El Niño event 1997/98.
